इस मुकाबले में अफगानिस्तान ने टॉस जीतकर पहले बल्लेबाजी करने का फैसला किया। लेकिन उनका यह फैसला उस पर भारी पड़ गया और पूरी टीम स्कोर बोर्ड पर 11.5 ओवरों में मात्र 56 रन जोड़कर पवेलियन लौट गई।
जवाब में, क्विंटन डी कॉक (5) के शुरुआती विकेट के बावजूद रीजा हेंड्रिक्स (नाबाद 29 रन) और एडेन मार्कराम ( नाबाद 23 रन) की मदद से दक्षिण अफ्रीका ने 9 ओवर के अंदर यह लक्ष्य आसानी से हासिल कर लिया, जिससे वे पहली बार पुरुष विश्व कप फाइनल में पहुंच गए।
