सैम ने मेलबर्न क्रिकेट ग्राउंड (एमसीजी) में भारत के खिलाफ बॉक्सिंग डे टेस्ट में डेब्यू किया था। उन्होंने नाथन मैकस्विनी की जगह टीम में शामिल होकर 65 गेंदों में 60 रन बनाए। शुरुआती ओवरों में उन्होंने बुमराह की गेंदों को आसानी से खेला, जिससे दर्शक रोमांचित हो गए। हालांकि, दूसरी पारी में बुमराह ने उन्हें आउट कर दिया।
