लगातार गिरते विकेटों के बीच इंग्लैंड के कप्तान जो रूट ने कुछ हद तक टीम को सहारा देने की कोशिश की और शानदार 50 रनों की पारी खेली। जो रूट लय में थे और उन्हें देखकर ऐसा लग रहा था कि वो आसानी से लंबी पारी खेल सकते हैं लेकिन ऐसा ना हो सका। ऑस्ट्रेलियाई तेज गेंदबाज मिचेल स्टार्क ने उन्हें दिन में तारे दिखा दिए।
