11 अगस्त 1954 को लुधियाना में जन्मे दाएं हाथ के बल्लेबाज यशपाल शर्मा अपने मजबूत डिफेंस से किसी भी अटैक को बेअसर करने में माहिर थे। 1977-78 में दिलीप ट्रॉफी में नॉर्थ जोन की तरफ से खेलते हुए उन्होंने साउथ जोन के खिलाफ 173 रन की पारी खेलकर अपनी पहचान बनाई। अगले सीजन में यशपाल ने पाकिस्तान का दौरा किया, लेकिन टेस्ट टीम में जगह नहीं बना सके। हालांकि, कुछ वक्त बाद टीम में आखिरकार मौका मिल ही गया।
